Mother of pearl is the organic iridescent coating formed on the inside of a shell called nacre. The lining of oysters or fresh water mussels, are viewed as the mother from which the pearls are born. TheAncient Egyptians were known to have used mother of pearl from at least 4200BC, as pieces were found in the pyramids and tombs of the ruling classes.
